Bulgarian long-term stay (immigration) visa D

The Bulgarian visa D is absolutely essential for those, willing to settle long-term in Bulgaria and the EU. In order to obtain a residence permit in Bulgaria, the foreigner must first apply for and get visa D. In general, visa D should be applied for from the country of residence of the foreigner, although certain exceptions are possible. The legal ground for the issuance of the visa is art. 15 of the Bulgarian Foreigners Law:

A long-stay visa with a validity period of up to 6 months and a right of residence of up to 180 days may be issued to a foreigner who wishes to obtain a permit for prolonged, long-term or permanent residence in the Republic of Bulgaria on one of the grounds specified in this Act.

Art. 15, par. 1 of the Bulgarian Foreigners Law

In certain special cases, the visa D can be valid for a period of up to 360 days. In all cases, the main purpose of the visa D is to enable the foreigner to obtain a residence permit in Bulgaria.

As from 31.03.2024, the visa D is also a Schengen visa and is good for travel everywhere in the Schengen area.
